The Show Must Go On With Virtual Civic Awards 2020

Published November 03, 2020 By

EVEN a global pandemic has failed to stop Middlesbrough's unsung heroes getting the big thank you from their town they truly deserve.

When the coronavirus crisis struck in March, Middlesbrough Council was in the process of asking for nominations for its second annual Civic Awards.

The 2019 event was held at Middlesbrough Town Hall and the award presentation was attended by more than 170 people.

But despite Covid-19 meaning the town couldn't come together to celebrate the achievements of its citizens it was decided - the show must go on!

A virtual Civic Awards 2020 has now been held. Awards have been hand delivered - with social distancing in place - to the winners and a video announcing the results has been filmed with presenter Gary Philipson.

The 12-minute feature film can now be viewed on Middlesbrough Council’s social media platforms or on the authority’s website at https://www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/mayor-council-and-councillors/civic-and-ceremonial/civic-awards

The categories are:

  • Citizen of the Year.
  • Covid-19 Award.
  • Helping People to Improve their Educational and Vocational Capacity (business) Award.
  • Helping People to Improve their Educational and Vocational Capacity (community) Award.
  • Improving Employment Opportunities for Residents (business).

Cllr Mieka Smiles, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Communities and Education, said: "We were absolutely determined that all of the unsung heroes who make Middlesbrough a better place would be celebrated.

"That goes for everyone who was nominated as much as the winners - we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who goes above and beyond in their community or work."

Host Gary Philipson said: "Congratulations to all the winners and don't panic if you didn't get one of these wonderful, wonderful trophies - you are doing something splendid and we love you here in Middlesbrough and we thank you very much for being a massive part of the community.

"We will see you here next year and hopefully not by camera - hopefully in the Town Hall!"
