David Takes on Mountain Challenge for a Passage to India

Published December 05, 2017 By

A YOUNG Middlesbrough man has set himself a mammoth task of climbing the world’s second highest mountain in a single day - right here in his gym in Middlesbrough, in order help young people in India.

David Bigham, 21, from Acklam in Middlesbrough, will be attempting to walk a distance which is the equivalent of reaching the height of K2, the second highest mountain in the world at just over 8,600m high, by walking more than 35 miles, on a 15% incline on a treadmill.

After graduating this year with a degree in Politics from Newcastle University and trawling through pages of what he felt were unrewarding jobs, David who currently works in a local superstore, was inspired by an advert from the International Citizens Service that kept coming up.

While in Railmagra in Udaipur, India, a deprived small rural town, he will be working with young people to increase their involvement in their local communities, help deliver health and education programmes, equip them to find jobs and access basic rights like water.

David said: “I’m massively excited to take this on, because I know I’ll be helping where it is most needed and it’s only by getting fully involved can you hope to make a change.

“I was set a fundraising target of £800 before I can go to India in January, so I decided to do something mad and walk the equivalent of climbing K2 in a day.

“Having looked what volunteering with the ICS involves it looked hugely rewarding and as it is a government sponsored scheme I know for definite that I’ll be helping in a way that is most needed.”

His challenge starts at 8am on Wednesday, December 6 at Lifestyle Gym in Middlesbrough and he aims to finish by 10pm.

Those sponsoring him for over £3 will get the chance of winning 20% of his sponsor money by guessing the actual time taken, with the closest guess getting a share of the spoils.

The other 80% will go to help International Citizens Service sustain their projects which have been helping to eradicate poverty since 1958.

The real K2.
