Mela Knitters Branching Out With New Art Works

Published August 10, 2018 By

VISITORS to Middlesbrough Mela 2018 are encouraged to cast their eyes up into the trees and enjoy works created by close-knit groups of local enthusiasts.

It’s definitely ‘knot’ something you will see every day...

The large-scale art installation hand-crafted by local groups, schools and individuals will adorn the bandstand and trees in Albert Park at the Middlesbrough Mela 2018.

Using a classic children’s toys as the basis for each artwork, knitters have transformed the simple hula hoops into unique, eye-catching works of art to be enjoyed by all.

Over 100 hoops were requested from groups, schools and individuals across Tees Valley.

At Hemlington Hall Academy, more than a hundred young people have been working with teachers and teaching assistants to create a number of weaved hoops and bespoke mobiles.

Marton and Nunthorpe Knitters, famous for their poppy display at Nunthorpe train station last year, are making flowers, characters and bunting that will decorate the site.

Other groups participating include the mima Cloth Club, Middlesbrough Town Hall Big Knit group, Linthorpe Women’s Institute, Preston Hall Museum volunteers group and a number of local artists and individuals from all over the region.

Councillor Mick Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: “The Mela committee have been overwhelmed by the community's response to The Mela Big Knit.

“It’s exciting and inspiring to see so many people join in and create such wonderful, colourful pieces of art.

“All of the individual pieces will be brought together at Middlesbrough Mela to create a series of art installations across the site.

“The committee have loved working with so many different community groups and hope to see everyone again at the festival.”

The 2018 Middlesbrough Mela takes place at Albert Park on August 11-12 from noon – late.

The event is sponsored by Unison Middlesbrough, the Police & Crime Commissioner For Cleveland, Tees Valley Community Foundation, Teesside University and W Crow & Son.
