Prizes for Unusual Finds with New Litter Picking Group

UNDERPANTS and floor lamps - just some of the unusual items already cleared from Middlesbrough's streets by a newly formed litter picking group.

The Linthorpe Litter Pickers is a family friendly group who encourage residents of the town's Linthorpe and Park wards to bring children along to their events.

It has been formed by ward councillors Philippa Storey, Naweed Hussain, Julia Rostron and Theo Furness.

The councillors are encouraging more residents to join their Facebook page and to take part in keeping their part of Linthorpe tidy.

All children taking part get a certificate for their community clean-up efforts and a special certificate is awarded for the most unusual find.

So far clean-ups have taken place at Eastbourne Road shops and Linthorpe Cemetery. Residents can also propose where future litter picks should take place by contacting the Facebook page.

Cllr Philippa Storey said: "Linthorpe is full of beauty but like every other area has issues with litter.

"These events are meant to be fun and community minded. So far all the children have absolutely loved taking part and it's a nice way for both children and adults to make new friends.

"Sometimes people might look at litter and think ‘what difference can I make?' Working as a team we are showing you can make a big difference and have a nice time while doing it."
