Plastic Police - Force to be Reckoned with

By Published September 06, 2019

THERE'S a new environment cop in town and he wants everyone to join his plastic police force.

Peate the Plastic Police is the brainchild of nine year old Caiden, from Hemlington, and was the winning entry from a competition run by Middlesbrough Council to create a character for a new waste and recycling campaign.

The campaign aims to increase the rate of recycling in Middlesbrough by encouraging children and adults alike to make it a fun activity.

Current recycling rates in Middlesbrough are 33.1% compared to the national average of 44.8%. The target is to increase local recycling rates to 40%, in line with the EU target for the UK to recycle at least 50% of household waste by 2020.

Caiden, age nine, from Hemlington Hall Academy, was the standout winner, beating entries from across the Tees Valley.

"I designed Peate using my favourite colour, red, and because I really like the police," said Caiden. "I wanted to give him an extra big bright smile to make him look really happy so I added the gold star too."

Mieka Smiles, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Culture and Communities said: "It was brilliant to meet Caiden and find out more about his inspiration for Peate the Plastic Police character.

"We hope that Peate's smiley face will encourage everyone to get involved in household recycling. There's a really good opportunity during Recycle Week to make it a fun activity for all the family."

Recycle Week takes place September 23-29.
