Hitting the Roads with a Motivational Message

Published December 12, 2019 By

MEET the motivators - the team of three hitting the roads on their mission to make Middlesbrough a healthier and happier place.

Asiya Dawood, Jordan Thompson and Coral Danby are known to many as the friendly faces as you walk into the Live Well Centre, Middlesbrough's one-stop healthcare shop in the Dundas Arcade, where they offer advice to people who want to make healthier choices as well as supporting our most vulnerable residents.

Now, they're taking their mission out to local communities to spread the word about the benefits of healthy living.

The team offer drop-in clinics in three locations across Middlesbrough, to make it easy for people to get face-to-face advice on healthcare services without travelling into the centre.

Motivator Jordan said: "I come from a health background, but I was fascinated by The Live Well Centre and the holistic approach to wellbeing that it offers.

"I'm passionate about Middlesbrough and the people who live here. It's no secret that the town has its share of health problems, and the Motivator team wants to do our part to improve these."

Asiya said: "We are the eyes and ears within the community, helping people to access services that they sometimes don't even know exist. Once people decide they want to make a change, it can be difficult to know where to start. Our job is to make that a bit easier for people, so they not they're not alone."

The team can offer advice on a range of issues including debt, physical and mental health, advice to quit smoking, general advice on health or specific conditions such as diabetes, tackling addiction and other welfare issues.

With the knowledge of all the services available, the team can offer motivation, general advice and signpost clients to the medical and specialist services available, Coral said: "Helping people get the support they need to make healthier choices and improve their lives is incredibly rewarding. I'm really proud of what we've achieved, and this is just the beginning. The plan is to hold drop-in clinics in more locations, to reach as many people as possible."

A non-smoker for two years now having made the decision to quit, Coral believes the personal experience and down to earth approach of the team helps break down barriers.

"It's a big step for people to take to come and ask for advice and it's so important that they then get a friendly welcome, a sympathetic ear and are signposted to the experts who can help them make lasting change," she added.

  • The Motivators are at the The Live Well Centre on Mondays 2pm-6pm and Fridays 10am-12pm and hold drop in clinics at SWITCH (North Ormesby Hub) on Tuesdays 11am-1.30pm, Middlesbrough Community Bank on Tuesdays 2-5pm and DWP Job Centre on Thursdays 10am-5pm.
