National Celebration Coming to Middlesbrough

By Published September 06, 2019

THOUSANDS of people are expected in Middlesbrough's Centre Square this Saturday to celebrate recovery.

The town is hosting the 2019 UK Recovery Walk to highlight the success of people who have recovered from drug and alcohol addictions and those on their recovery journey.

Visitors to Centre Square this week will have already seen that the fountain's water has been turned purple - the colour of recovery - and that the recovery flag is flying over the Town Hall.

On Saturday (September 7), from 11am-4pm there will be a family friendly fun event, with free food and speeches. From noon everyone is invited to take part in a walk which will begin and end in Centre Square.

The event is an annual one held every September organised and hosted by Faces and Voices for Recovery (FAVOR UK). This year Middlesbrough submitted the winning bid to hold the event.

Middlesbrough's Deputy Mayor and Thematic Lead for Drugs, Cllr Antony High, said: "I'm really proud that such an event is coming to the centre of Middlesbrough, it's a monumental statement from the local authority to be supporting and promoting such a critically important message.

"The fact is, the people of this town need to know that recovery is real and you can recover in Middlesbrough.

"This will go some way to reassure the public that we are doing everything possible to fight the damages caused by substances and showcase that those individuals in recovery can play a vital role in the town's progress.

"I'm unaware of any other town or local authority who has taken the measures we have such as flying the Recovery flag above the Town Hall and changing the colour of the water in the Centre Square fountain to purple - the colour of recovery.

"I believe us to be the first in the UK and that shows our seriousness and compassion towards those individuals and for the town."
