Renewed plea for safe and legal parking near schools

Published June 11, 2024 By

There has been a renewed to drivers over dangerous school parking.

A renewed call is being sounded to drivers to park safely and legally near schools.

Road safety chiefs say inconsiderate drivers are continuing to put lives at risk by parking on zig-zag and double yellow lines.

In addition to the risk posed to pupils, pedestrians and other road users, the culprits face fines, penalty points and even driving bans.

The alert from Middlesbrough Council’s Road Safety team comes with a reminder that stopping on zig-zag lines outside a school carries a fine of  up to £100.

Stopping on white zig-zags (near a marked crossing) can lead to the fine and up to three penalty points, and failure to stop for a school crossing patrol officer attracts a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points.

Lollipop staff regularly report feeling scared to step out onto the road due to drivers failing to stop, while inconsiderate and illegal parking near schools and crossing points reduces visibility and increases the risk of accidents.

Councillor Peter Gavigan, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Environment, said: “Parking like this near schools is selfish and inconsiderate, and there’s no excuse for it.

“The markings near schools are there for a reason, and parking on top of them puts lives at risk.

“I’d urge drivers to park responsibly and legally – if you don’t you will be prosecuted.”
