Crematorium's recycling boost for local charities

Published June 24, 2024 By

Local charities have been given a much-needed boost thanks to a unique recycling scheme.

Teesside Crematorium’s 2024 donation of £14,000 will be shared between the Middlesbrough branch of Cruse Bereavement Care and Still Parents Teesside.

Under the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management’s Metal Recycling Scheme, families can give consent for the recycling of metals resulting from cremation.

These include metals used in orthopaedic implants such as hip and knee replacements and in the construction of coffins.

The national scheme enables Middlesbrough Council - which runs the crematorium - to make an annual charitable donation to local good causes.

Cruse Bereavement Care in Middlesbrough has been providing specialist bereavement support locally for many years.

The charity’s team of dedicated bereavement volunteers provide high quality one-to-one and group support to bereaved children, young people and adults in Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas.

A Cruse spokesman said: “We are extremely grateful to Teesside Crematorium for the incredible donation of £7,000 through their Metal Recycling Scheme.

“We are a charity providing free of charge services, so this generous donation helps to support the much-needed work that we do. A very big thank you.”

Still Parents Teesside provides baby bereavement support, with monthly support group meetings, held on the second Thursday of each month at the Beacon Community Building in Coulby Newham.

A spokesman said: “We are delighted to have been nominated to receive this money which will help us to continue the work we do.

“We are there to support anyone affected by the death of a baby and this generous donation will make a real difference.”

Councillor Peter Gavigan, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Environment, visited Teesside Crematorium this week to present cheques to representatives from the two charities.

He said: “These charities make a real and lasting difference to so many lives, providing priceless support to young people and parents as they navigate some of the most challenging times any of us will ever face.

“I’m delighted that we are able to support that invaluable work through this innovative scheme.”

The Metal Recycling Scheme was launched by the ICCM in 2004 in partnership with Dutch company Orthometals, to help bereavement services ethos to make a difference to the communities they serve and to make the least impact on the environment.

ICCM Chief Executive Julie Dunk said: “The metals recycling scheme is provided at no cost to crematoria that have signed up to the scheme.

“Metals are recycled with the kind permission of next of kin, and include valuable metal items such as artificial hip joints which are recovered during the cremation process and melted down for recycling.

“Now in its 20th year, the scheme has raised almost £20 million for charities and good causes nominated by each participating crematorium or council.

“It’s always wonderful to hear about the work that is supported by the money raised, and in this instance, we’re so pleased to be able to support the important work carried out by Cruse Bereavement Care in Middlesbrough and Still Parents Teesside.”
