Increased Childcare Entitlement For Working Parents

By Published June 20, 2017

FAMILIES in Middlesbrough with a three- or four-year-old could benefit from an increased childcare entitlement.

From September, free childcare available to working parents will be set at 30 hours per week, double the amount currently available.

The extra allocation has been designed to make it easier for parents to work, while also providing access to childcare opportunities for disadvantaged children.

Councillor Jan Brunton, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Education and Skills, said: “This extra provision will make a big difference to people bringing up young families.

“Childcare can be prohibitively expensive, so this allocation will enable many parents to work more and achieve a greater quality of life.

“I would urge anyone eligible to apply.”

To be eligible for the free childcare increase, both parents must be working (or the sole parent if in a lone parent family).

Each parent must have a weekly minimum income equivalent to 16 hours at national minimum wage, and an income of less than £100,000 per year.

The entitlement will be available during term time, which equates to 38 weeks per year.

Applications need to be approved by the beginning of the term to be eligible.

Families who are approved later than this date will need to wait until the following term to receive the increased entitlement.

  • Applications for the September term are now open.
