Tree planting to mark HOLOCAUST Memorial Day 2022

TREE PLANTING TO MARK HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 2022.

A tree will be planted this week to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 in Middlesbrough.

The Town Hall will also be lit in purple on Thursday (January 27) in commemoration of the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

It's an opportunity to pause and remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, and the countless others killed under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides around the globe.

The theme for this year's Holocaust Memorial Day is One Day - one day to remember the atrocities of the past, and to hope that one day we will live in a world where genocide no longer happens.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston will plant a silver birch near the Chapel of Remembrance at Acklam Cemetery at 10.30am.

Jolande Mace, Middlesbrough Council's Strategic Cohesion and Migration Manager, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is so important because it is a chance for all of us to come together and learn from the past.

"The more we do that and empathise with others, the more we pave the way for a better future and ensure such atrocities can never happen again."

  • The UK Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 ceremony will be streamed online at 7pm.

To watch the ceremony live, register at Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | UK Holocaust Memorial Day: 2022 Ceremony (hmd.org.uk)
