Sikh Nagar Kirtan festival returns to Centre Square

Published July 10, 2025 By

One of Middlesbrough’s most vibrant and popular cultural celebrations will be drawing in the crowds at the weekend.

The annual Sikh Nagar Kirtan event returns to Centre Square on Sunday (July 13) with a celebration of the Sikh faith, community and unity.

A colourful and welcoming Sikh tradition involving the singing of sacred hymns through the streets in a spiritual procession, Nagar Kirtan will see the Sikh scripture the Guru Granth Sahib carried through the town on a beautifully decorated float, accompanied by hymns and prayers.

The annual celebration is to mark the birth anniversary of the 8th Guru Harkrishan Shaib Ji, displaying the message of the birth and legacy of the Khalsa, established in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and is a day to reflect on Sikh values of equality, courage and community service.

This Sunday’s event in Middlesbrough will feature a parade led by a float  from the Sikh Temple on Lorne Street, making its way to Centre Square from around 10am, where entertainment will include children’s activities, martial arts demonstrations and food stalls.

The parade will return to the Sikh Temple at about 3.30pm, with rolling road closures in place along the route.

Jagjit Singh, General Secretary of Middlesbrough’s Sikh Temple, said: “Nagar Kirtan is celebrated by Sikh communities around the world as a powerful expression of faith, unity and cultural heritage.

“We get incredible support every year from the people of Middlesbrough, and once again we invite them to join us in this joyous and inclusive celebration to which all are welcome.”

Middlesbrough Gurdwara President Gurmeth Singh Khalsa said: “Nagar means town and Kirtan refers to the singing of hymns, led by the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones) followed by the Guru Granth Shaib (Sikh Holy Scripture).

We like to hold this event annually as it brings the whole community together, not just the Sikh committee members but people from all religions.

“It’s a great day full of fun and laughter.”

Vice President Sukhwant Singh added: “Nagar Kirtan is a wonderful day for everyone to come together.

“As Sikhs, we believe in helping others. One way we do this is by holding a free meal service every Sunday, known as the Guru Nanak Free Kitchen.

“This initiative is supported by our Middlesbrough Gurdwara.

“We are very proud of this service, as we have been running it for many years and have even received awards for the support we provide to the people of Middlesbrough.

“The Nagar Kirtan also allows us to showcase how we are a sharing community.”

Councillor Philippa Storey, Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor and Executive member for Education & Culture, said: “Nagar Kirtan is one of the highlights of Middlesbrough’s cultural calendar, and offers a warm welcome to everyone.

“The Sikh community is a hugely import part of our town, and Nagar Kirtan’s powerful and universal messages of peace and togetherness embody what Middlesbrough and its people are all about.”
