The A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange is undergoing a major programme of repairs and improvements which are set to run until the autumn.
The works - including concrete repairs beneath the bridge, replacement of waterproofing, new kerbs and footways, resurfacing, and the installation of new pedestrian fencing and vehicle safety barrier – will require a temporary continuous contraflow system on the A172.
Work has started today (Monday, March 2), and will continue until autumn 2026.
Temporary lights will be used during certain phases, with occasional overnight lane and full road closures.
The contraflow will temporarily reduce the north-south traffic capacity over the bridge, with single lanes in each direction.
Motorists are also being warned that when travelling east or west on the A174 and accessing Marton Road via the slip road, it will be a left turn only onto Stokesley Road, with no right turns permitted.
When crossing the bridge, right turns onto the A174 will also not be permitted.
Middlesbrough Council has worked closely with main contractor Esh Construction to enable traffic to continue to use the bridge while the works are ongoing to avoid the need for lengthy diversions.
Advanced warning notice boards will be placed on the affected roads ahead of any expected full closures.
