Defibrillator brings life-saving boost to Town Hall

Published May 05, 2026 By

A life-saving machine has become the latest addition to Middlesbrough’s historic Town Hall.

The high-tech defibrillator has been installed in the building’s reception area where it will be easily accessible in an emergency.

The ‘heart restarter’ device was donated by Oxygen Finance as part of the company’s commitment to social value.

In addition to providing the equipment, Oxygen Finance has also funded staff training to support its effective and confident use.

James Himsworth, Head of Sourcing & Procurement at Oxygen Finance who run Middlesbrough Council’s supplier incentive programme, said: “Defibrillators save lives, and the more we have, the more lives we can save.

“Middlesbrough Council is the perfect partner for this, and the Town Hall is easily accessible should the need arise.”

It is estimated there are around 30,000 cardiac arrests outside hospital settings every year, with defibrillators providing simple-to-use, self-explanatory help where it’s needed most.

They’re available 24 hours a day all year round, helping to save lives in the crucial moments after a cardiac arrest and before paramedics arrive at the scene.

Welcoming the donation, Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke added: “This is one machine you hope you will never have to use, but they have saved countless lives in the vital minutes before paramedics arrive.

“I’m grateful to Oxygen Finance for this generous donation and it’s one that has the potential to make a truly life-changing difference.”
