Middlesbrough and District Rambling Club was formed over 100 years ago, and welcomes walkers of all ages and abilities.
And they’ve been given the backing of Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd – himself a keen walker - who recently welcomed members to Centre Square.
Throughout the year, members get together for a weekly walk in North Yorkshire, County Durham and further afield.
Walkers have a choice of two groups – one for those who don’t want to cover more than five or six miles and another for those up for a longer outing of up to ten miles.
Club Chairman Phil Semp said he hoped potential new members would take advantage of the fine weather to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors.
“For many members Sundays are the highlight of the week – it’s the perfect time to chill out, breathe in some fresh air and take in some stunning views,” he said.

“Walking’s for everyone, regardless of age – and we’re blessed with some of the best and most unspoiled countryside anywhere right on our doorstep.
“Walking with a group is a chance to leave our worries behind, make new friends and enjoy beautiful scenery - as well as keeping fit at the same time.”
Rambler Kay said: “After a week at work, getting in the great outdoors and observing nature is a fantastic thing to do. It makes me feel alive!”
And fellow member Babs added: “Joining Middlesbrough Ramblers opened up a whole new world for me.
“It’s that sense of achievement when you have climbed a hill and see breath-taking views. Walking is a wonderful pastime, whatever season of the year is.”

Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd said: “The fact that MDRC is still going after 106 years is testament both to walking’s popularity as a pastime and to the stunning countryside we have all around us.
“The health benefits of a good walk are well known, but it’s equally beneficial for mind and spirit, and that’s no bad thing in these uncertain times.
“I wish the Club every success for the future, and would encourage anyone with an interest to get in touch and try it for themselves.”
- All are welcome to join members on any of the walks – join in up to three walks before paying the annual fee of £10.
Weekly walks set off at 10.30am from destinations on the walking programme – details available on Facebook and on the Gazette and Northern Echo websites.
Membership not open to under 18s. Safety is paramount and walkers are asked to wear sensible footwear and clothing. No dogs.
