Seasonal cheer on offer at annual homelessness event

Published November 13, 2024 By

Warmth, cheer and a hearty meal will be on offer next month to those who find themselves homeless and in hardship.

In Out of the Cold takes place every year in Middlesbrough in the run-up to Christmas.

The event aims to raise awareness and provide advice and support in a safe, relaxed and friendly environment to people experiencing difficulties.

And it’s a chance to pick up a warm coat to fend off the worst of the winter chill – donations are currently being accepted at collection points across the town.

In Out of the Cold 2024 – co-ordinated by Middlesbrough Council - takes place on Monday, December 16 in the Crypt at  Middlesbrough Town Hall from 1pm to 3.30pm.

The event is made possible through kind donations and volunteering from a range of statutory, private and voluntary sector organisations and members of the public.

Hot food is provided, as well as live music from a local singer and the Recovery Choir.

Attendees are given a Christmas gift box including new items such as hats, socks, gloves and toiletries and have opportunity to choose donated coats and warm clothing and access a range of different of services.

In common with other towns and cities across the UK, Middlesbrough has seen an increase in the number of residents experiencing housing needs and unstable accommodation.

The Council and its partners offer outreach, accommodation and support to all those affected with housing need issues, as well as those experiencing other forms of hardship.

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said: “In Out of the Cold is an invaluable opportunity for those individuals who might be isolated or disadvantaged due to homelessness to engage with help and support.

“It is amazing to see so many organisations and members of the public, get involved every year to support our Middlesbrough communities and make this event such a success.”
