Venom The Last Dance Review by Oliver Grainger

Published November 20, 2024 By

Here are some of my thoughts on the newest Venom film

Eddie and Venom are being pursued not only by the american military but Venom's home. The symbiotes that arrived on Earth are being hunted by their very creator Knull in his desperation to break free from the prison that he has been trapped in. To make matters worse, Eddie realises that the very thing that Knull is searching for to escape is Venom and learns that as long as one of them lives, Knull will keep killing innocent people in his quest for vengence.

The audience first see Venom/Eddie in the bar from Spider Man No Way Home where Eddie is arguing about what an alien is. Throughout the film, the relationship between the pair seem to be tested because they can no longer go home, due to the events of Venom Let There Be Carnage, as Eddie is being hunted for something he did not do. Therefore, the audience find Eddie in a dark place at the beginning of the film because he has no way of clearing his name whereas, Venom seems to be having the time of his life singing, dancing and making drinks. The contrast between the two characters generates of humour throughout the film and defies different adaptations of Venom from the Marvel Comics as a creature of pure evil.

Recurring characters such as Mrs Chen appear to in the film briefly to round out the trilogy and bring more humor to the film and allows the audience to see a more comedic side of Venom due to his relationship with Mrs Chen. Newer members such as Martin, Rhys Ifas bring more humour to the film as he and his family are hunting for aliens and encounter Eddie/Venom on their trip. This creates comedic elements as Eddie is the very thing that Martin and his family are hunting. Other characters such as Juno Temple's Dr Payne and Chiwetel Eijofor's Rex Strickland help to create a more serious tone to the film as they not only pose a threat to the future of Tom Hardy's Venom but also are the ones who discover who Knull is.

However, some could argue by making Knull, voiced by Andy Serkis, a minor character within the film may make the film feel a anti- climatic ending to the trilogy as the main protaganist to Venom is a gigantous symbiote seeker, whereas in the other two films villainous roles have been played more present within the film such as Woody Harrelson as Carnage and Riz Ahmed as Riot. This may make certain audience members feel that the film is a anti climatic goodbye to the character as they have not seen a battle between Knull and Venom that seemed likely to happen the more that the film progressed.

Choice of music such as David Bowie's Ground control to major Tom, benefits the film due to the fact that Venom is stranded much like major Tom and his home are trying to reach him much like the ground control. It also fits the film because it implies that major Tom is lost much like Eddie is at the end of the film without Venom.

Finally, the use of a montage of Venom pairing with different animals and controlling them help to remind the audience that although the symbiote is a comedic character within these adaptations, he is still insanely powerful.

Overall, a good addition to the Sony/ Marvel universe and a good trilogy of films that offer a different perspective to the character of Venom however, the third installment is not as good as the other two.

Rating 8.5/10
