Bumper summer in store at Middlesbrough Museums

Middlesbrough’s ever-popular museums are gearing up for a bumper summer of fun for all the family. 

The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum (CCBM) reopens for the summer holidays on Saturday (July 19), kicking off the Middlesbrough Museums summer programme which runs until Sunday, August 31, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm.

Alongside events at the ever-popular CCBM such as the Colourscape Experience and the return of the Pirate Takeover Day, the Dorman Museum will host Big Science workshops, Dino Day and more.

Summer events at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum:

• Colourscape Experience

Tuesday, August 5 – Wednesday, August 6, 10.30am - 3.30pm

Immerse yourself in a unique and mesmerising experience that blends light, colour and music, wandering through tunnels of radiant colour in this touring labyrinth.

• Colourscape Sensory Activity Zone

Tuesday August 5 – Wednesday, August 6, 10.30am-3.30pm

Perfect for all abilities from those with additional sensory needs to families of all ages. Play with sensors and push pads to create a range of light and sounds. Free with Museum Admission.

Pirate Takeover Day

Tuesday, August 12, 10am - 4pm

Pirates have taken over the museum- Join us for our interactive Pirate trail, swashbuckling activities, inflatable assault course, and fun challenges. Free with Museum Entry.

• Hawaii Picture Hunt Trail

Saturday, July 19 – Sunday, August 31 , 10am - 4pm.

Surf through the museum on a tropical treasure hunt- Spot Hawaiian items in surprising places and learn about the history of Polynesia, Hawaii and Easter Island.

• Northern School of Art ‘Nautical: Many Journeys, One Ocean’

On Display until Sunday, August 31

First Year students from the Northern School of Art’s L3 Textiles and Costume course invite you to be transported to the 18th century world of the Royal Navy, exploration, and Polynesia. Free with Museum Entry.

Events at the Dorman Museum:

• Big Science ‘Fizzy Foamy Reactions’

Friday, July 25, 10.30am and 12.30pm, Dorman Museum

Make fizzy, foaming and colour changing chemical reactions in this amazing workshop and enjoy some of our favourite Big Science demonstrations.

Dino Day

Friday, August 15, 10am-4pm, Dorman Museum

Join our team of Jurassic explorers and take part in some raw-some dinosaur activities. Meet Pete the T-Rex and our baby dinosaurs, take part in our family craft and handle real dinosaur fossils. Free Entry, some activities have a small additional cost.

• Big Science ‘Superb Slime’

Saturday, August 30, 10.30am and 12.30pm, Dorman Museum

Make your own pot of slime to take home and explore solids, liquids and non-Newtonian fluids in this sensationally slimy science workshop.

• Trailblazer Carriage Experience

Saturday, July 19 – Sunday, July 20, 10am - 12.30pm, Dorman Museum

Jump on board a 19th century carriage and listen to a soundscape celebrating Teesside women as innovators, activists, workers and adventurers, as spoken in their own words. Free event.

• Eco Workshops ‘Our Place in the Family of Things’

Saturday, July 19 - Saturday, August 23, various times, Dorman Museum

Join us for environmentally driven workshops every Saturday at the Dorman Museum, in conjunction with the ‘Our Place in the Family of Things’ exhibition.

• VR Jungle Ride

Saturday, July 19 – Sunday, August 31, 10.30am - 3.30pm, Dorman Museum

Embark on this mission with DASH to retrieve the key, remember to keep your wits about you, steer clear of obstacles and make it back with the key.

 • Survival Status Safari Trail

Saturday, July 19 – Sunday, August 31, 10am - 4pm, Dorman Museum

Journey through the museum to track down creatures teetering on the edge of extinction. They’re hiding in plain sight – can you find them?

• Create an Insect Workshop

Friday, August 8, 10am - 3.30pm, Dorman Museum

Build your own beastie for the Cardboard Pop-Up Museum before it tours Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland this Autumn. Your creations will all become part of the exhibition. Free Event.

Alongside these amazing events both the Dorman Museum and Captain Cook Museum are running regular family craft sessions on a drop-in basis throughout the summer.

The Dorman Museum craft sessions are every Wednesday and Friday and include wreath making, mosaics and more.

The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum Crafts are running every Tuesday and Thursday including paper jellyfish, turtles and more.

Councillor Philippa Storey, Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor and Executive member for Education & Culture, said: “School’s out very soon, and young inquiring minds – not to mention mums, dads and carers – will have lots of free time over the long summer break.

“That’s where our amazing Museums come into their own – there really is something for everyone, from digital thrills to creative arts and crafts.

“They’re always popular, so book early to avoid disappointment!”

• All events other than the Colourscape Experience are free with museum entry.

The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum is open 10am - 4pm Tuesday to Sunday. Museum Admission and Tickets can be purchased at - HOME - Captain Cook Birthplace Museum.

The VR Jungle Ride, Big Science, and Eco Workshops are ticketed events.

Dino Day has some paid elements such as ‘Meet Pete the T Rex’ but is free to attend otherwise.

The Trailblazer Carriage and Insect Workshop are free to attend.

The Dorman Museum is open 10am - 4pm Tuesday to Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at - HOME - Dorman Museum (venpos.net).
