A lane closure on a section of Ladgate Lane was put in place last year following significant damage to a culvert below the carriageway.
A full repair was due to start next month, and was expected to take several months to complete.
Now concrete supports and other measures will be put in place to allow both lanes to reopen, while maintaining the structural integrity of the bridge and the safety of the public.
Work on the temporary repair will begin tomorrow (Tuesday, February 24) and take around ten days to complete, and this will remain in place until work on a permanent solution can begin later in the year.
Neighbouring ward Councillors will be updated throughout the process, and further announcements on progress will be made in due course.
A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “This has been a complex and costly repair from the outset, and the initial closure was unavoidable to ensure public safety.
“We have worked closely with our contractor to explore a number of possible solutions, and a considerable amount of design work was required to devise a long-term repair.
“With the imminent start of work on the A174/Marton Interchange scheme and the likely delays that will cause, the decision was taken to introduce a temporary repair to ease pressure on the network.
“We understand people’s frustration at the length of time this has taken and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
“We will complete the work as soon as possible, and we are grateful to the public for their continued patience and understanding.”
