The museum will be transformed into Elf Town where young visitors can help Santa to get ready for the upcoming big day.
Activities include a festive story with Mrs Claus, the chance to help Santa sort all the letters he has received and an opportunity to write a letter to be added to the pile.
There is also some essential elf training and some creative fun decorating gingerbread characters.
The Christmas cheer continues with a crafty elf challenge and a family-friendly museum trail to locate the cheeky gingerbread characters who can be found throughout the galleries.
A special visitor will be popping in this Saturday and Sunday (December 2 & 3) between noon and 2pm to say Hello-Ho-Ho! One of the few opportunities to see Santa for free in Middlesbrough, he will wander the museum to greet families and stop for photos along the way.
The weekend’s Extravaganza will also offer a festive craft market for visitors to shop small and support local makers and bakers.
Tickets to Elf Town are £5 per child, accompanying adults are not required to buy a ticket.
The crafty elf challenge (£2) and the cheeky gingerbread trail (£1) incur an additional charge. Visitors can book their space and collect a trail from the welcome desk upon arrival.
Also launching this weekend is a new theme for the Virtual Reality Santa’s Sleigh.
The popular ride is making a welcome return and this year people can hop aboard to experience Santa’s Toy Shop in 4D, fully immersive glory via the virtual reality headsets.
The experience includes sights, sounds and motion and is recommended for ages five and over. Younger children who might not be comfortable wearing the VR headset can also experience the ride via a large-screen TV.
Tickets are £4 per person or £14 for a group of four.
The festive fun comes to a delightful seasonal end with some Yuletide Winter Magic on Saturday, December 16.
Little imaginations will be captivated by the Holly and Oak King as he tells traditional Christmas tales, before everyone comes together to make a holly headdress.
There are three session times to choose from at 10.30am, 12.30pm or 2.30pm and ticket price includes a tasty hot chocolate drink. Accompanying adults do not need to book a ticket.
It is also the last chance for people to experience the Brick by Brick exhibition that will be available until Sunday, December 10.
Featuring work by international artists, designers and photographers who use LEGO® bricks as their medium or their inspiration, the exhibition features a range of two and three dimensional works, from jewellery to sculpture, photography and more.
