They’re invited to a breakfast meeting next week to gauge interest, and seek views on what the group might offer.
The idea – in partnership with Station Suites – was the brainchild of Staying Included Officer Linda Ford who says the underlying aim is simply to bring people together in a relaxed environment.
She said: “I was asked if there were any local groups for veterans, but when I did some research it turned out there weren’t any in Middlesbrough so people are having to travel to other parts of the area.
“We want to find out what veterans want from a group, what form it should take and what support would be of assistance to them.
“We could help with signposting and referrals to other services such as housing, finance and social care.
“Mainly the group would offer an opportunity to talk to others who have served, spend social time out of the house, have fun and find out how our Staying Included service can support you.
“I’m delighted to have Station Suites on board with the project, and their support will be crucial in providing a meeting space and refreshments.”
Linda and Dawn from Station Suites are inviting anyone interested in attending such a group to come along to an informal meeting next Friday (July 18) to share their views.
It’s a chance to put forward ideas on what the group should offer, how often it should meet and what support and resources are needed.
Councillor Linda Lewis, Middlesbrough Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “We owe our service personnel – both veterans and those currently active – an enormous debt of gratitude, and it’s vital that we do all we can to support them.
“Groups like this are a fantastic opportunity for those who have served their country to get together, share stories and make new friends.
“It’s also a chance to access information and support should they need it in a relaxed and friendly setting.
“I’d urge any members of the armed forces living locally to pop along and get this venture off to the flying start it deserves.”
• Anyone who’d like to find out more about a new group for armed forces veterans in Middlesbrough is invited along for a breakfast bun and a coffee on Friday, July 18 from 10am to noon at the Station Suites, 5 Linthorpe Road (opposite the train station).
