Officers raise hundreds to help local youngster

By Published August 24, 2018

Cleveland Police presented Stockton youngster Alfie Watson with a cheque for more than £800 after officers and staff cycled, ‘dressed down’ and ran a tuck shop for his fund.

Five-year-old Alfie was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and spasticity in his lower limbs as a tot. His family have been advised he would benefit from a spinal operation and are aiming to raise around £35k for his healthcare.

In June PC Dawn Young from Middlesbrough’s Neighbourhood Policing Team completed a 50-mile sponsored bike ride across Teesside and into North Yorkshire.

PC Young was joined by PC Andy Anderson, PC Chris Swales, PC Tashfeen Majid, PC Tim Nuttall and Julie Pearce who works in Middlesbrough Council’s Community Safety Team.

Sponsorship from the ride, a regular tuck shop and the proceeds from a dress down day meant Cleveland Police have raised £862.81 in total towards the operation fund.

PC Young said: “We wanted to support this fantastic local cause and make a difference to Alfie and his family.

“As well as the cycling we ran a tuck shop and a dress down day for colleagues who were able to take part. We’re pleased to be able to make a contribution to Alfie’s fund and raise awareness of what his family are trying to do.”

Alfie’s mum Katie said: “We want to say thank you, every donation helps as we have a long way to go to reach our target.”
