The implementation of new signals at the junction of Hemlington Hall Road and Stainton Way was started last autumn, with completion delayed due to winter weather and other temporary traffic signal roadworks at the new housing development on Stainton Way.
The upgrades – part of a major programme of investment across the town’s road network – will ease vehicle movements into and out of the junction, improve road safety, alongside the installation of new footpaths, cycle crossings and access to the surrounding area.
The project - which uses external Department for Transport funding provided for one-off maintenance and improvement works on the Council’s transport network - required the temporary removal of right turns at the junction, resulting in unavoidable disruption and delays.
Consultation on these works – including detailed maps – was undertaken with local residents living closest to the junction last year.
It is now hoped to complete the works by the end of March, when the junction will operate as normal.
Further landscaping work will be undertaken in due course, but will have no impact on traffic flows or those using the footpath.
A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “Works of this nature will inevitably cause a degree of disruption to the travelling public, and we will take any measures available to us to keep that disruption to a minimum.
“Unfortunately in this case the work has overrun by a number of weeks due to factors beyond our control, but we hope to complete the project by the middle of this month.
“As ever we apologise for any inconvenience during these essential upgrades, and thank the public for their patience and understanding.”
