Appointing a Chief Constable is a key responsibility of the PCC and an opportunity to build on the significant progress the force has made, as well as to deliver on the ambitions of Matt’s new Cleveland Police and Crime Plan.
Last month, the current Chief Constable Mark Webster provided notice of his retirement from policing after almost 34 years of service.
Thanking Mark for his dedication after three years at the helm, Matt said he is now looking for an exceptional leader to make a real difference to the people of Cleveland.
He said: “Mark has provided authentic and inclusive leadership to not only remove Cleveland Police from ‘special measures’, but to create the stability and structure needed to see the force make significant improvements.
“I will be looking for a strong and courageous leader who has the skills and determination to develop on the good work to date, to build trust and confidence in policing and drive down crime.
“I also expect the prospective candidate to strive for a police force that reflects the make-up of our communities, which they serve, so they can understand their concerns and experiences better and become more effective in building public confidence in policing. "
The interview and assessment process involves several stages over two days and includes personality testing, stakeholder and workforce panels and a final appointment panel where candidates will be formally interviewed.
Matt continued: “We are looking for someone that can bring significant operational credibility alongside strategic organisational leadership. A reflective and collaborative leader with the humility to learn from those around them, taking the best ideas from subject experts and partners to ensure we are developing the best service possible.”
“I’m seeking a Chief Constable who understands the rich diversity and complex needs of our communities, and who can develop strategies to keep them safe, with resources that never stretch as far as we would like.”
The latest His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) Inspection Report has recognised the force as being one of the most improved in the country.
Matt added: “This is a fantastic time to join Cleveland Police; the foundations for continued development and success have been laid, and I am excited and honoured to continue on our ambitious and rewarding journey of improvement.
“I have worked in collaboration with the College of Policing to develop a robust recruitment process to find Cleveland Police’s next leader; someone who our officers and staff can be proud of and trust to build a strong force for the future.
“It’s important the steps are made in this next chapter to build on the significant progress already made, as well as recognising the future brings challenges and opportunities to build safe, strong and confident communities across the whole of Cleveland.”
