Budget ‘to improve lives’ approved by councillors

Published February 19, 2026 By

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke says the Council’s budget for 2026/27 is all about delivering for residents after it was approved last night.

Plans to invest more than £6m in priority services were backed.

The Council will spend more on services for young people, including ensuring there are youth clubs or activities in all 20 wards around town.

The budget also includes a combined £800,000 for new play park equipment, repairs and park rangers to spruce up all open spaces.

A free pest control service will be introduced and the Council’s team of neighbourhood caretakers will be doubled. The team, first brought in last year, carries out improvement work on all estates.

There will be no increase in the general council tax. Bills will go up by the 2% adult social care precept. The £1.5m raised will go towards the increasing costs of the Council’s legal duties in looking after vulnerable adults.

During a vote at Middlesbrough Town Hall, 37 councillors voted for the budget with three voting against.

Mayor Cooke said: “This budget is all about our residents. We’re able to target over £6m of new investment on improving people’s lives and making Middlesbrough a better place to live. It’s pleasing that the budget got such widespread support and I’d like to thank all councillors for their input. It’s now up to us to deliver.”

Other investment confirmed in the budget includes £500,000 to bring more events for people of all ages to different parts of town.

A total of £650,000 will be spent on strengthening the Council’s CCTV network, employing more enforcement staff and helping police on specific issues involving young people.

More detail on the free pest control service will be considered by councillors in the coming weeks. Further consideration will also be given to changes to the garden waste charge and parking charges.
